What’s Going On This Weekend In/Around Highlands


Saturday:

Clean Ocean Action: 9 – 12;00 Beach Sweeps & Bunker Tours, Recreation Beach, Snug Harbor Blvd Highlands

Seastreak Oktoberfest at the Beach 12:30 – 4:30pm Seastreak Parking Lot, Shore Drive This authentic festival will include live musicians, dancers, and performers and promises to bring some of Germany’s best beers, wines, and foods to a giant Bavarian-style tented beer garden on the beach each weekend in October!

Highlands Zombie Walk Parade Saturday at 2:00pm

Make-up artists will be available at 10AM in Huddy Park to complete your transformation! (Optional purchase)

The parade begins promptly at 2PM. Immediately following the parade, there will be a costume contest at Veterans Park with CASH prizes You must be registered to be judged in the following categories:
Overall Best Zombie Costume
Best Zombie Male
Best Zombie Female
Best Zombie Child

The Zombie Pub Crawl will be held from 3:00-700PM

Sunday:

Sandy Foot Society, Pumpkins in the Park (RSVP a must) Sunday at 9:30am – 11:00am Huddy Park

This is a great way to meet new Highlands’ mommy and daddy friends and have some fun! Please dress warm, bring a picnic blanket and your little ghost or goblin. They will provide pumpkins and crafting supplies. If it gets too chilly we can visit our friends at Waterwitch Coffee or et al 🙂
The target age range is elementary school and younger. Please RSVP

Sandy Hook, Fort Hancock Day 12:00pm – 4:30pm 26 Hudson Road Highlands, New Jersey

On Fort Hancock Day, volunteers from the Army Ground Forces Association (AGFA) in World War II uniform will bring Battery Gunnison and its 6-inch guns to life as they were in 1943. Visitors can watch or help AGFA members conduct gun drills at Battery Gunnison, track ships, see how an original Model 1900 six-inch gun (over 25 feet long and weighing 10 tons) was aimed and loaded, learn about Fort Hancock Army medical support, see machinists making parts for the historic M1900 6-inch rifles, and more.

Asbury Park Zombie Walk

This year it’s Zombies vs. Brain Cancer! To help us fight the war against brain cancer we are calling on the most powerful army we know, the undead.  The 2014 New Jersey Zombie Walk will kick off “GREY MATTERS,” a campaign that spreads awareness about brain cancer.

Oktoberfest is back in Highlands


oktoberfestWhat? Highlands 13th Annual Oktoberfest

Where? Veterans Park on Bay & Shrewsbury Avenues

When? Saturday, October 5th from 2 – 9 PM.

Admission and Parking is free. The rain date is October 6th from 2 – 8 p.m.

Food has been known to run out at this event, so go earlier than later.  Butch Greenwaldt )( (think Hofbrauhaus) will be preparing traditional German favorites hot off the grill such as bratwurst, knockwurst, kraut, potato pancakes, goulash, sauerbraten and Bavarian noodles.

A beer truck will also be there with Oktoberfest Beers, both light and dark, and Coors Light for the less adventurous.

Hallow-Marine-A Haunted Look at Sandy Hook

Get a haunted look at Sandy Hook on this spook-tacular family-oriented guided tour featuring the Lost Pirates of Sandy Hook, weird facts about animals that lurk on the shore, and a trek through the mysterious marsh at twilight. Part of the NJMSC Family Science F.I.S.H. Program, Hallow-Marine is always a fast sellout. Pre-registration is a must. 5 pm – 8 pm.

Fort Hancock Days @ Sandy Hook
Fort Hancock Historic District
Saturday, October 27 & Sunday, October 28m 1 PM – 5 PM
Mark the anniversaries of Gateway’s 40th and the 1895 establishment of Fort Hancock and discover the fort’s role in the defense of our nation. Visitors can watch or join in helping AGFA members conduct gun drills at Battery Gunnison, to see how an original Model 1900 six-inch gun (actually over 25 feet long and weighing 10 tons) was aimed and loaded. An original World War II ambulance will also be on display, complete with period medical equipment and staffed by an AGFA volunteer Army nurse.
