Which Highlands Restuarant are you Going to Miss Most this summer?

Clam Hut

Highlands Corned Beef

I wanted to write up where the best place to get corn beef for St Pattys Day, but came to the conclusion, I make the best.

secret recipeSo here’s the recipe:
1- 4lb Corn Beef Brisket
12 oz bottle Guinness Stout (no substitutions)
1 packet of pickling spices (usually comes with the brisket)
1 head of cabbage
8 – 12 baby potatoes halved
salt & pepper

Put potatoes in the bottom of a large slow-cooker or crock pot. Rinse the corned beef brisket and place over vegetables fat side down. Add the bottle of stout, spices and enough water to almost over the meat. Cover and cook on LOW for eight hours.

Take out brisket and potatoes and cover with aluminum foil. Place cabbage (cut in quarters) in slow cooker and cook on high 20 to 30 minutes, until softened but still crispy.

Slice brisket across the grain, serve with vegetables & the rest of the Guinness.

Bay Ave Closed March 16 for Highlands Guinness Run

The race will begin at Havana’s, 409 Bay Avenue, where contestants will fill their cup and race to Miller St., and back to the finish line at Havana’s. The contestant with the most liquid in their cup at the finish line, wins the 1st Place trophy and $100 in Bid Bucks. 2nd Place will receive a $50 Bid Buck.

What is a BID Buck? — No Idea.. I think the important take away here, is you get a Trophy and Guinness. Now if you got a trophy filled with Guinness even better.

Where is the best place for a Valentine’s Dinner

heart in sand Its Valentines day in Highlands 2014, there are limited places to go out from years past. That being said, where’s the best place to have a romantic dinner in Highlands?

What not to do when pulled over for DWI in Highlands

rt 36 quickchekFriday night a Middletown teen was charged with driving while intoxicated,  as well as eluding the police, refusal to submit to breath tests, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, no headlights, failure to maintain lanes, unlicensed driver, unregistered vehicle and uninsured vehicle. She later was released with a pending court date. (I’m kind of wondering why there wasn’t a drinking underage  tagged on..)

Let’s go over the mistakes this kid made:

Mistake #1: Getting drunk at 18 and getting behind the wheel of a car that’s not yours

Mistake #2: Deciding to go to Quick Chek after Mistake #1 and actually going in while an on duty PD was also in there

Mistake #3: When pulled over by PD that saw you in Quick Chek, as he’s walking toward the car take off through intersection

Mistake #4: Hit 3 park cars trying to escape

Mistake #5: Ditch the car,  hide behind a house and pretend it never happened.

Luckily no one was seriously hurt, except for maybe the drivers ego.  Hopefully this was a life lesson.

Sea Bright “NEW” Spring Break Spot??

ImageSea Bright Mayor Dina Long wants college students to pass on the Ft Lauderdale beer festivities and come to the real Jersey Shore to get their hands dirty and shirt soaked in  sweat (instead of beer), for a good cause.

Frustrated by Congressional foot-dragging  and prospect of another six months before the town sees a dime of the Sandy Money, Long said it’s up to the town to rebuild itself. And to do so, she hopes to tap into the good will of people.

“We want to bring in groups of skilled volunteers that will hang Sheetrock, do subflooring, and do light carpentry.”

Kudos Mayor Long, Hopefully Highlands Mayor Nolan will follow in your footsteps. Or here’s an idea, Sea Bright gets the college students to help Highlands AND Sea Bright, & Highlands will supply the Beer & Pizza…

Highlands: Sour Sandy Benefit

marctlthLast week the Chubby Pickle partnered with Carton Brewing to launch a benefit night for the staff of Twin Light Taphouse who have been out of work since the storm. At this event, the entire Twin Light Taphouse staff  bartended and waited on customers at the Chubby Pickle and kept the proceeds. Carton Brewing helped with the efforts by releasing a couple of specialty beers only found at this event. One of the beers was appropriately named Sour Sandy.
