Why You Should Go To Wednesday’s Highlands Council Meeting?

Well, I’d tell you what its going to be about, but the town has failed to post the Agenda AGAIN.agenda416  According to the Open Public Meetings Law, which is commonly referred to as the “Sunshine Law”, they are supposed to not only give adequate notice but also to extent known the agenda of the meeting.

Could there be penalties for violating this? The penalty section provides for fines of $100 for the first offense, and between $100 and $500 for any subsequent offenses.

The Council likes to complain that residents don’t attend meetings, but they are also very culpable for not posting agendas.

  1. I think another reason would be that our borough staff is over tasked and overwhelmed. The preparing of the agenda for Council meetings falls under the job responsibilities of our borough administrator. Depending on when that is made available I would think the actual posting falls under our town clerk and web site administrator? Loosey-Goosey management and a callous disregard for public accountability would be my votes.

    • Again, because everyone down there is paid BIG MONEY to be PART TIME. Lets get a FULL TIME dedicated people to run Highlands.

  2. I have a feeling that we’ll be told that it was posted on the bulletin board at Borough Trailers and that is considered “notice.” Never mind that many of us in town leave for work before borough hall is open and arrive home well after they are closed. I’m not saying that borough hall should be open later, either. Just that the web site is a key source of communication that is under utilized.

  3. I invite you to read “The Citizen’s Manual”

Also, (pg 55 #3) Council Minutes must be available promptly. Promptly = “minutes need to be available before a topic, which has been previously discussed, is addressed at a future council

    Worth everyone reading.
