Highlands Resident Involvement Wanted

By Guest Blogger Kim S.

At last night’s council meeting there were some items discussed where residents can get involved:
  • Per Mayor Nolan, there will be seats opening up on the Planning Board and the Zoning Board.  Interested candidates need to complete the Citizen Leadership Form and deliver it to Carolyn Cummins.  The form can be found here:
Higlandsnj.com, then click Borough Hall and you’ll get the page with all the boxes. Click “Municipal Forms” which is the second row, right hand column. Scroll down to the section “Municipal Clerk Forms” and the Citizen Leadership Form is the 2nd to the last in that section.
  • If you are interested in volunteering to assist in the repairs to the VFW Hall or the Community Center, you can sign up at Rebuilding Together  Also, A Future With Hope is working on some local projects. You can find that list here: and volunteer here: http://www.afuturewithhope.org/registertovolunteer
  • A town hall meeting regarding the Transit Village Designation was announced last night.  It will be held on November 18th.  Time and place not yet announced.
  • The update to the Master Plan will be done by the Planning Board.  If you’d like to be involved you should attend the Planning Board meetings.  Planning Board Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month unless otherwise stated on the Annual Schedule Resolution at 7:30 p.m. at the Highlands Elementary School,360 Navesink Ave, Highlands, NJ.

  1. Kim,

With all due respect, to think that just because someone fills out a form, that they will fairly get any consideration to serve on a board, is just plain naive!! Fill out all the forms you want, at the end of the day, those appointed to the boards will be people that the appointers know will do what they want them to do. Do you honestly think that Mayor Nolan will appoint anyone to the planning board, that he thinks will have an independent mind? Really?

Look at some of the people that are on the boards now. Many are on several boards simultaneously! The council and mayor has shown that they are not transparent and are not interested in anyone whos ideas and opinions differ from theirs.

I know for a total fact that several people in the past, with considerable experience and past service to the town have been overlooked intentionally due to the fact they will not town the line, and are independent minded.

But feel free to fill out all the forms you want. Nothing will change until these people are changed.
