  1. House #1 and #2 are owned by the same people that Havannas rent from. She is a HBP board member and they pay to have the borough workers mow the lawn. They were going to build a hotel, like the one in Atlantic, but because of the market slow down and the zoning, it sits there. An eye sore to anyone who comes into town. It’s not what you know, but who you know.

    • So does this landlord maintenance expense come from their business … Or is it paid by funds out of the HBP?

    • I think they town should raise their rate to mow the lawn a minimum of 5% per year until it’s cheaper for them to hire their own damn landscaper.

    • House 1 is not owned by that couple, in fact it is owned the Penta family, who also own a couple of more house/rentals on Waterwitch.

  2. I’m voting for Bay Ave #1 because when people drive into town, they stop at the Waterwitch/Bay Ave intersection, and that is what they see. Bay Ave #2 is obscured by some tall shrubbery/trees. It really is a disgrace. if we can’t tear down #1 then let’s at least get someone to paint a mural on it.

As for who owns it…I thought the hotel people owned just the vacant lots and not the lots that contain the buildings? All I know is that Bay Ave #1 and #2 have looked the same since 2005. I can’t believe the council isn’t embarrassed that this is one of the first impressions people get of our town.

  3. House 3 has, according to zillow, been gutted on the inside and is being rebuilt.

On another note, anyone know what happened to anything highlandsnj.us related? The only things that work on the website are highlandsnj.com pages. You think it has anything to do with it still being in Bruce Hilling from Namibia’s name?

  4. House # 3 had no occupants prior to storm and has had nobody working on it since? Its windows are boarded up and the small front porch is dilapidated. The photo on ziilow was before the storm and was taken off market 8/17/12. I think they all are atrocious!!

  5. Curious as to why Bay Av 1 and 2 haven’t been addressed, this pre Sandy ? There are so many more to add to the list. They’re bulldozing in Union Beach!!

    • Yup. Here’s the APP article. http://www.app.com/article/20131003/NJNEWS/310010117/Sandy-demolitions

Makes the home owner responsible for tipping fees and there are a lot of different companies helping. Sounds different than the group that approached Highlands after the storm that had issues with documenting where the debris was going. Once again, positive press about recovery efforts someplace else. Seems like any article about the Highlands recovery has to do with the back filling of the town which is not worth rehashing again.

Why can’t we get organized help like this???? If the borough doesn’t have the man power to get the word out they should be asking residents to help make some phone calls or write letters.

  6. Hi. I’ve been hearing mixed feelings that this Abandoned House Tour on Fridays is perceived as negative press. Even though I don’t agree with it being negative since a picture’s worth a thousand words … I was thinking, why not put a positive twist on it? There are so many homes being lifted and so many homes in town maintained with pride … why not mix in some photos of those homes as well? kinda like the good, the bad & the ugly all in one shot!

  7. I have to go for Number 2 also! Love that in/out planting ..not. Really liked the thought above to ALSO do a prettiest house too!! Some of the houses have really been done nicely and the owners have gone to extremes to replant and really bring the heart back in to Highlands.

    • Kinda feel that these homes that have been allowed to sit in bad condition in itself is bad press when people come through town. This is community blog that addresses community concerns along with community events not press for Highlands we have Mayor & HBD for that:) It is a reality that needs attention in the community so seems like appropriate forum for it. Perhaps some of the owners of these properties will actually do something about it instead putting their heads in the sand.

  8. Firsly,

I already suggested to the blog that pics of houses that are being maintained by also featured here. Specifically homes that are not presently being occupied, but the owners or someone is properly maintaining and securing them.

Also, Carolyn, I think you are being hard on the house with the weeds growing out of it. Dont you know a green house when you see one?? 🙂
