What Highlands Could Learn from Waveland

wavelandWaveland is a city located in Hancock County, Mississippi, on the Gulf of Mexico.  The City of Waveland was incorporated in 1972. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,674. Waveland was nearly destroyed by Hurricanes Camille on August 17, 1969 and Katrina on August 29, 2005. (kinda sounds like Highlands right?)

Their Mayor, Tommy Luong when interviewed at the time said, “Folks just needed anything that … was positive, that showed progress,” he said. “We cleaned off the church; we pushed all the debris and things off the church and we started having church (services) the week after the hurricane on the slab.”

Longo also noted with pride that the town already has taken its first step in the rebuilding process by attracting a Lowe’s home improvement store.

“Lowe’s had called … (to) give me their condolences … and I called and said if you want to do something for our community … open a store,” he waveland2said.

The company agreed, and a ground-breaking ceremony was held that October, the city even set up temporary housing to accommodate the workers.
