  1. Isn’t it funny…every year we have to deal with this clam fiasco, but we never hear about any arrests (I find it hard to believe somebody doesn’t atleast get drunk and out of hand), we never find out who is paying for all of the police overtime (not too mention other public employees), and you mean to tell me all of that money the HBP makes goes to pay for a few parades and a tree lighting?

I enjoy parades as much as the next guy, but I’d be a little bit more enthusiastic about this annual inconvience if you told me some of the money was going to a good cause or that it would somehow lower my taxes!

  2. I don’t think the purpose of Clamfest is to arrest people (although I could be wrong.) That being said, do I think there *are* arrests? Sure. Do the police *not* make those arrests public? Sure. But that’s not a Clamfest thing, that happens all year. Very few incidents actually make it out to the public. (Although I think there have been more this year than other years). So, here’s a tidbit for you there was a chase down Shore drive (heading towards Connors) last night, Bike chasing a car yelling “you better turn around now!” Followed by 2 cop cars. You know something had to have happened, you can’t leave town from that portion of Shore Drive. But what happened beyond that, I don’t know.

    • Well first off, I think they tore down “Connors” several years ago, but, fortunately, I have actually picked up a few books on the ancient history of Highlands so I have some idea what you’re talking about.

Secondly, I’m not sure what a “Clam Fest thing” is….you mean like let’s sweep everything under the carpet and look the other way while the people get their fill of bread and circuses?

Yes, those arrests happen all year long, but you mean you don’t want to know about them? Shouldn’t they be publicized as well? Every other town has a police blotter, but somehow in Highlands, if we don’t talk about – crime just doesn’t exist!

And exactly how much over time do we have to pay those boro workers so that Carla can have her little block party?

    • The only reason you know where Connors is, is through history books? Really?? Wow… You don’t get out much do you?

Secondly, the arrests and police activity not making it public is not limited to Clamfest (hence a Clamfest thing) it happens all year long.

Your beef is with the council who wants to limit public knowledge of most things police related. But they will point their finger at the Police, who will point their finger back at the council. Try it for yourself at a council meeting.

Lastly, Clamfest is a *community* thing. And I like it.

Also, Carla didn’t start Clamfest.(It’s not *her* block party, although I understand why she and you mistakenly think it might be) It was initially done outside of the BID. Its my understanding it was actually put on by the clammers. Hence the nickname Mollusks and Mullets festival. (Although that nickname might be known by the Boat riding Benny’s and not known by any of the locals)

I remember back in the day when you could get a bucket of steamers for $10 walk over to the VFW parking lot to sit down and get a beer and not walk around of the back of the VFW. Also, side note, the VFW beer garden was moved because BID said Clamfest is ‘for the children’ and the alcohol had to be out of the view of ‘the kids’ – but she doesn’t seem to hold the same views for the Shore Distributor Wine Garden. (I guess wine is more classy and ok for ‘the kids’ to see.)

    • Well…interesting and informative! I’m serious…thank you for offering some intelligent commentary.

I have never heard the term “Mollusks and Mullets” and, seriously, when did they tear down “Connors?” I’m going to guess it’s gone atleast 10 years so I don’t think it’s a question of getting out too much. Pretty funny about not wanting the kids to see alcohol – God knows they don’t see it anywhere else in town and they have no idea why all of those people are walking funny around the festival. Of course, these are the same kids who swear in the skate board park like drunken sailors and insult me on the streets every chance they get.

And I heard that most of the clams don’t even come from around here! Are those local clams safe to eat?

I would go to a council meeting, but my experience has consistently been, “That’s the way we’ve been doing things for years and who are you to question us?” Every time I suggest to anybody they try to do something a different way, I usually get a blank stare!

  3. Okay…I may be wrong about this one, but if it’s true – this is BREAKING Highlands news –

I believe, the car outside of Frank Noland’s house with the parking ticket on it – is HIS car! And I think the ticket is for blocking HIS driveway!

Could it be remotely possible that the HPD doesn’t know what the mayor drives and where he lives?
